Ginger Inspired Insect

My Buddies Albert Ng, John Park and Ben Mauro were doing a form language exploration, and I was feeling inspired to join. So this mini project is a response to their assignment. Truth be told, however, I don’t think that I actually followed the exact assignment as I picked my own inspiration and ran with it! I figured the more random, the better!

This insect began with a sketch exploration in brush pen that was inspired by a piece of ginger I had. I broke down the main form concepts found in the root, did a few studies then began the ideation phase. (If you are skeptical about whether or not ideation is a real word, like I was, you can find it being widely used in many design cultures like entertainment, automotive and product design, where it can be easily adopted). In the end, this concept was a blast to create. The creature started to take on a life of its own and happy accidents helped make this journey loads of fun.

Below are some ideation sketches for this creature and also a series of vehicle designs I had.

Super Speedies

These were done super quickly. I gotta take advantage while I have a few spare moments. I enjoy putting down color without having to use fancy brushes, like I use all the time at work. It is a nice departure and is a blast to do as it feels much more artistic! Anyhow, I did these in painter, which is a rad program!

I have been away, doing a lot of reading on all kinds of subjects. Also, in the meantime, I have sold my first oil painting, which was as much a surprise as it was enjoyable. The only funny thing was that I was so excited I forgot to take a picture of it before giving to the guy who purchased it. But all said, there is more for where that came from and it is good to know that that making images for people in that context can be very meaningful to the people who hang it in there houses.

I just felt like painting something colorful, so I thought of some fish. Although I was looking at some fish to get this guy started, I quickly ditched the reference and went full steam ahead. I had a great time doing this quick little study…

4th of July Weekend

My girl and I headed down to Los Angeles for the weekend. On the plane I decided to try to complete some speedies for as long as my computer could tolerate. It was a quite a challenge considering that the airlines like to cram there economy passengers in like chickens. All said, flying Virgin America still has its advantages, like TED Talks lectures for FREE! These paintings were all done in short 30 to 40 minute periods. I have been having fun doing them.

The paintings on the bottom were inspired by some paintings with a similar color palette. I just had to get it out of my system and they were a blast.

Lately I have been getting into painting things around me. In loading these images up, I realized that this paints a pretty clear picture of my work environment. I like to keep things simple and clean. I was focusing on color and edges with these guys.

While I was still in school at Art Center I had a great time working on a project with the grad industrial design department. It was both entertaining and socially responsible, which was rewarding.

The idea for the project was that each designer was given a deck of playing cards that would ultimately drive design. This helped to create back story. Chosen at random, each card described a small segment of the infrastructure of a future world like key political changes, population changes and disease epidemics. The eerie thing was that all the cards were relevant to what could potentially happen in the future should society make certain key and pivotal decisions.

Honda: One to the Power of Four

This is actually old news, but something recently came up that reminded me of a project that I worked on while at the Honda Advanced Design Studio in Pasadena. The first assignment was to work on this concept called one to the power of four, a mega car that splits into four smaller cars to save energy. Some may be asking how that works. The big idea was a kind of organized ride sharing where the vehicles bond together when convenient and break apart when their routes go in different directions. Anyhow, this project was submitted for the Los Angeles Auto Show of 2007 and recently made its way into the June 2008 Dwell Architecture Magazine (pg. 189).
